DELI SERDANG | INDATANEWS.COM - A total of 14 students representing Deli Serdang Regency delivered outstanding performances at the Southeast Asia Olympiad Championship and Sustainable Tourism Workshop 2026, held at the UniSZA Gong Badak Campus in Terengganu, Malaysia. The students returned home with four medals after competing against hundreds of participants from several Southeast Asian countries.
The competition was held from August 17 to 22, 2026, over six days. The event was organized by Pusat Asasi Sains dan Perubatan UniSZA (PUSPA) in collaboration with Koperasi Homestay Telok Ketapang Terengganu Berhad. A total of 390 students from four countries participated in the event.
The achievement of the Deli Serdang students was particularly noteworthy as they competed against participants from different regions and countries, each with varying academic abilities and competencies. Of the 14 students representing Deli Serdang, 13 came from SMP Negeri 1 Lubuk Pakam, while one student was from SMP IT Ali Bin Abu Thalib.
The results did not come overnight. Before taking part in the competition in Malaysia, the students underwent six months of preparation and targeted training. This preparation period played an important role in equipping them for both academic tests and competitions that required language proficiency and public-speaking skills.
The intensive training paid off, with four students winning medals. Two students secured gold medals in the Mathematics Test category, while two others each won a bronze medal in the English Proficiency Test and Speech categories.
Two Gold Medals in Mathematics Test
Janeeta S Ruby and Mhd Kaysan A. Pramana were the two Deli Serdang students who won gold medals in the Mathematics Test category. Their achievements demonstrated their ability to solve mathematical problems in a competition involving participants from four countries.
The success also reflected the results of six months of training and preparation. The targeted program helped the students improve their academic abilities while building greater confidence ahead of the international competition.
In addition to the two gold medals, Deli Serdang also secured two bronze medals. Agnesia Simanjuntak won bronze in the English Proficiency Test category, while Angelika Patresia Gultom received a bronze medal in the Speech category.
The achievements demonstrate that the
Deli Serdang students' abilities are not limited to mathematics. Their English proficiency and ability to convey thoughts and ideas convincingly through speeches also helped put the name of Deli Serdang on the map at a Southeast Asian competition.
The achievements of the four students were part of the overall performance of the 14 participants representing Deli Serdang Regency at the international event. For the other participants, the trip was also a valuable experience. They had the opportunity to learn how international competitions are conducted, interact with participants from other countries and develop the confidence to perform before an international audience.

Deli Serdang Education Office Commends Students' Achievements
The Head of the Deli Serdang Regency Education Office, Suparno, praised the students' achievements. In his view, the results demonstrated the great potential of students from Deli Serdang to compete at international competitions.
"We appreciate the achievements of the children from Deli Serdang. The four medals prove that our students can compete at the international level with proper preparation and targeted training. I hope this achievement will also motivate other students to continue learning and striving for excellence," Suparno said.
According to Suparno, the four medals were not only a source of pride for the students and their schools, but also for Deli Serdang Regency as a whole. The results showed that developing students' abilities could lead to achievements when they were consistently prepared and given opportunities to participate in major competitions.
Participation in an international competition also gives students the opportunity to measure their abilities against those of participants from other countries. Such experiences are expected to strengthen their competitive spirit and encourage them to further develop their skills in various fields.
Suparno also emphasized that the achievement should serve as motivation for other students. He expressed hope that more students from Deli Serdang would have the courage to participate in competitions at both national and international levels.

On the occasion, Suparno was present alongside supervising teacher Nelly Gajah Manik and delegation leader Sri Dewi Kesumaning Ayu. Their presence and guidance supported the students throughout the various programs held at the UniSZA Gong Badak Campus in Terengganu.
Suparno hopes that the four medals won by the
Deli Serdang students will motivate them to further develop their potential. At the same time, he encouraged the students to continuously improve their abilities and not hesitate to take part in competitions at various levels.
For the students, participating in an international competition is not solely about winning medals. Such events also provide opportunities to strengthen their academic abilities, language proficiency, rhetorical skills, discipline and confidence when interacting with participants from other countries.
The achievements of Janeeta S Ruby, Mhd Kaysan A. Pramana, Agnesia Simanjuntak and Angelika Patresia Gultom are expected to inspire other students in Deli Serdang. Their success shows that students from the region can compete on the international stage and achieve strong results when provided with appropriate training and preparation.
