NORTH SUMATRA PROVINCIAL GAMES TO TAKE PLACE FROM 1–9 DECEMBER: KONI North Sumatra confirms that the 2026 Porprovsu will take place from 1 to 9 December across four host areas, featuring 30 sports.

DELISERDANG | INDATANEWS.COM - The Indonesian National Sports Committee for North Sumatra (KONI North Sumatra) has confirmed that the 2026 North Sumatra Provincial Sports Games (Porprovsu) will retain all 30 sports despite a change to the event schedule. Originally scheduled to take place from 7 to 15 November, the competition will now run from 1 to 9 December 2026.

The change of dates will have no impact on the number of sports or the competitions planned. KONI North Sumatra has assured participants that all events will go ahead as scheduled under the revised timetable. Thorough preparations are intended to ensure that athletes from the province's regencies and cities can compete under the best possible conditions.

KONI North Sumatra chairman Hatunggal Siregar announced the decision at a press conference at the North Sumatra Youth and Sports Office on Jalan Pancing in Deliserdang on Monday, 26 October 2026. He explained that the revised schedule had been agreed following consultations with KONI representatives from the regencies and cities, as well as the relevant sports associations.

Revised Schedule to Ensure Smooth Competition

Hatunggal said the Porprovsu organising committee had already completed various preparatory measures and was technically ready to host the competition. However, recent consultations had led to an adjustment of the dates to ensure that the entire programme could run as smoothly as possible.

"We have already carried out various preparations and are technically ready," Hatunggal said.

He stressed that postponing the event would not mean reducing its scale. KONI North Sumatra remains committed to staging every planned competition so that athletes can demonstrate their abilities in accordance with the established programme.

This clarification is important for the preparations being made by regional delegations. These include arranging travel, accommodation, transport and meals, as well as coordinating technical requirements with the respective sports associations. With the revised dates now confirmed, all parties can adjust their preparations without disrupting the competition schedule.

Hatunggal expressed hope that the Porprovsu would be held in an orderly, smooth and successful manner in early December. He also emphasised the importance of ensuring that the opening ceremony takes place as planned and meets a high standard.

"We hope to stage the event as effectively as possible from 1 to 9 December. It will also serve as an important benchmark for us. We want the North Sumatra Provincial Sports Games to be successful, representative and well organised, with every aspect properly delivered, including the opening ceremony," Hatunggal said.

Thirty Sports Across Four Host Areas

The 2026 Porprovsu will feature 30 sports overseen by 28 provincial sports associations. These include football and futsal, both of which fall under the umbrella of the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI). Indoor volleyball and beach volleyball are also included within the volleyball discipline.

The competitions will take place across four host areas: Medan, Deliserdang, Binjai and Pematangsiantar. The distribution takes into account the different venue requirements of each sport, as well as the technical infrastructure needed to stage the events.

KONI North Sumatra has reiterated that no competitions will be cancelled as a result of the rescheduling. Delegations from the province's regencies and cities can therefore continue preparing their athletes for the sports and disciplines originally planned.

The Porprovsu also provides regional athletes with an opportunity to assess their performance, demonstrate the results of their training and development programmes, and compete against athletes from other parts of North Sumatra. The event is intended to strengthen regional sports development and contribute to sustained improvements in competitive standards across the province.

KONI North Sumatra to Cover All Event Organisation Costs

In addition to confirming the dates and competition programme, Hatunggal outlined how costs would be shared between KONI North Sumatra and KONI representatives from the regencies and cities. KONI North Sumatra will cover 50 per cent of the costs associated with participating athletes, while the remaining 50 per cent will be borne by the respective regional KONI organisations.

Athlete-related expenses include accommodation, local transport and meals throughout the competition. This funding arrangement establishes the respective contributions of each organisation towards supporting its delegation at the 2026 Porprovsu.

KONI North Sumatra, meanwhile, will bear the entire cost of organising and staging the event, covering 100 per cent of these expenses. The arrangement forms an important part of the organisational preparations, particularly following the change from the original November schedule to December 2026.

On the same occasion, Mahfullah, head of the North Sumatra Youth and Sports Office, emphasised that the Porprovsu was a regular sporting event that had to take place in its designated year. The change of dates would therefore not result in the competitions being postponed until the following year.

The North Sumatra provincial government, through the Youth and Sports Office, also handed over sporting equipment to KONI North Sumatra. The equipment belongs to the provincial government and is intended for use during the 2026 Porprovsu.

The handover forms part of the support provided for the technical preparation of the competitions. Using the available equipment is expected to help organisers meet the requirements of different sports at the various host venues.

With the revised dates of 1–9 December 2026 now confirmed, organisers have a firm timetable for strengthening coordination with all parties involved. KONI North Sumatra remains committed to delivering the Porprovsu in an orderly, smooth and successful manner without reducing the number of sports or planned competitions.

The success of the event will depend not only on the organising committee's preparations but also on coordination between regions, the readiness of sporting venues, financial support and the discipline of all participating delegations. Bringing these elements together is expected to ensure that the 2026 Porprovsu becomes a high-quality sporting event while strengthening the long-term development of athletes across North Sumatra.
