LABUHANBATU SELATAN | INDATANEWS.COM - A total of 33 motorcycle rickshaw (Betor) drivers in Labuhanbatu Selatan Regency received food packages from the National Zakat Agency (BAZNAS) of Labuhanbatu Selatan Regency on Wednesday, September 30, 2026. The assistance was distributed in collaboration with the Labusel Karang Taruna youth organization.
The aid distribution was part of the 66th anniversary celebration of
Karang Taruna and also marked the closing of the 2026
Karang Taruna Volleyball Tournament for the "Chairman of the MPKT Labusel Cup," M. Rafiq Simatupang.
The assistance was not merely part of a ceremonial anniversary celebration. The distribution directly targeted a group of workers who earn their livelihoods on the streets every day. Betor drivers are among informal-sector workers who require particular attention and social support to help meet their families' basic needs.
The 33 food packages were handed over directly by
Labuhanbatu Selatan Regent Fery Sahputra Simatupang, S.H., accompanied by
BAZNAS Labusel Chairman Muhammad Yusuf Hasibuan, S.Fil.I., S.H., the Regional Secretary, MPKT Labusel Chairman Muhammad Rafiq Simatupang,
Karang Taruna Chairman Andy Sahputra Nasution, Kota Pinang Mayor Mirwan Santosa Siregar, and representatives of the Regional Leadership Coordination Forum (Forkopimda).
Support Comes From Zakat, Infak and Sedekah
In the presence of the recipients,
Labuhanbatu Selatan Regent Fery Sahputra Simatupang emphasized that the assistance was funded through Zakat, Infak and Sedekah (ZIS) contributions paid and collected by the community through BAZNAS of
Labuhanbatu Selatan Regency.
The message conveyed through the event emphasized that ZIS contributions made by the public should not merely appear as figures in reports on the administration of religious social funds. Instead, the funds are intended to provide tangible benefits to people who need assistance.
The
food assistance for
Betor drivers also demonstrates how religious social funds can be used directly within the community. The distribution represents social care while also serving as an effort to ease part of the recipients' daily household expenses.
Through the management of ZIS funds, BAZNAS carries the responsibility of ensuring that the collected funds reach groups within the community who need assistance. The support provided to Betor drivers therefore represents a concrete form of religious social fund utilization directly focused on people's needs.
The collaboration with
Karang Taruna Labusel also strengthened the implementation of the aid distribution. BAZNAS was responsible for managing
ZIS funds, while
Karang Taruna contributed to promoting social awareness and the spirit of mutual assistance within the community.

As a youth social organization,
Karang Taruna has a strategic role in encouraging community involvement and the principle of mutual assistance. BAZNAS, meanwhile, is responsible for managing
ZIS funds and ensuring that they benefit groups within the community who require support.
The combination of these two elements subsequently resulted in a simple social assistance initiative that directly addressed community needs. The food packages represent a concrete form of concern for informal-sector workers who face fluctuating incomes on a daily basis.
Betor drivers are part of the economic life of the
Labuhanbatu Selatan community. Every day, they transport passengers and goods and are therefore among the transportation providers closely connected to people's daily activities.
At the same time, this occupation means that drivers' incomes are heavily dependent on daily working conditions. When the number of passengers or demand for their services declines, it directly affects their earnings. This makes social support particularly important, especially when household expenses still have to be met.
