MEDAN | INDATANEWS.COM ~ In Aceh, the Tok Imam Gampong plays a pivotal role as a village-level religious leader, wielding social, cultural, and spiritual legitimacy while guiding the community's religious life.
Daarul Naad, a master's student in Islamic Broadcast Communication at the Universitas Islam Negeri Sumatera Utara, highlighted that both villagers and local authorities formally recognize the Tok Imam Gampong through official appointments, assigned duties, and local regulations.
"The Tok Imam Gampong is not only a leader of religious rituals but also a sermon mediator, social conciliator, and guardian of collective community morals," said Daarul Naad on March 3, 2026, in Medan.

In the remote area of Kecamatan Sekerak, Kabupaten Aceh Tamiang, where access to formal religious education is limited, the Tok Imam Gampong serves as the main agent for instilling Islamic values.
Through personal guidance, exemplary behavior, sermons at the Meunasah, Friday prayers, Quran lessons, and daily social interactions, the Tok Imam shapes villagers' religious understanding and practices.
"The communication strategy of the Tok Imam Gampong is particularly effective because it is rooted in emotional and social closeness. This trust surpasses that given to external actors—a powerful social model for Dawah," added Daarul Naad.

Challenges and Adaptations
Despite their central role, Tok Imam Gampong face several challenges:

Multifaceted Roles in Village Life

Religious and Sharia Leadership: Leading congregational prayers, Quran classes, funerals, and Sharia enforcement at the village level.
Village Administration: Collaborating with the Keuchik in governance.Conflict Mediation: Resolving disputes in traditional village courts at the Meunasah.Education and Meunasah Management: Guiding basic Islamic education and community activities.Social Initiatives: Organizing community events, Islamic festivals, and health programs.Role Model and Volunteerism: Serving without a fixed salary while earning high respect in the village.
Within the Po Teumeureuhom system and Syiah-Kuala legislation, Tok Imam Gampong assert their position as religious authorities working alongside the Keuchik, who manages customs and administration. (IDNC)
