MEDAN | INDATANEWS.COM – Saipul Bahri has urged the public not to exaggerate or politicize the overseas medical treatment of Rico Waas, emphasizing that healthcare is a fundamental right for every citizen, including a mayor.
The Secretary of the NasDem faction in the Medan City Council stated that public discussions regarding Rico Waas' treatment abroad should not create negative perceptions within society.
"Every citizen has the right to receive medical treatment, including the mayor. Therefore, I appeal to all parties not to overreact or steer this issue in an inappropriate direction," Saipul Bahri said on Monday, May 18, 2026.

Saipul Bahri stressed that Rico Waas had completed all administrative procedures before departing overseas. He added that the planned medical treatment had also been officially reported to Indonesia's Ministry of Home Affairs.
According to him, both the medical expenses and travel costs are being fully covered through personal funds and not financed by the regional budget (APBD).
The Chairman of GARPU North Sumatra also assured the public that the administration of the Medan City Government continues to operate normally during the mayor's absence.

Therefore, I do not think this issue needs to be excessively exploited," Saipul stated.
NasDem Faction Reaffirms Support
Saipul Bahri further emphasized that the NasDem faction in the Medan City Council would continue supporting Rico Waas' leadership as long as he carries out his duties in accordance with existing regulations.
He said the mayor's vision and programs are aimed at improving and advancing the city of Medan.

"Our position is clear. As long as the mayor performs his duties according to the rules, we will fully support him. However, if there are policy mistakes, we will criticize them for the better future of Medan," he said.
Public Asked to Remain Objective
Saipul Bahri also called on the public to remain objective and avoid turning personal health matters into political controversy.
