MEDAN | INDATANEWS.COM ~ The Muhammadiyah Student Association (IMM) is commemorating its 62nd anniversary under the theme: "62 Years of IMM – Commitment to a Meaningful Movement for Indonesia." This slogan is more than symbolic; it reflects a clear stance and a timely call for the student movement to create tangible societal impact.
Akbar Muhadist, Secretary-General of the IMM North Sumatra Regional Board, emphasized that after more than six decades, every action of the organization must focus on real effects for the community, the nation, and civilization.
"IMM builds its movement on a triad of religion, student engagement, and social involvement. The question is no longer whether we are active, but how effective our activities are," Akbar stated.

"Our preaching must go beyond symbolic spaces and lead to enlightening social transformation," Akbar explained.
He added that IMM cadres must embody a progressive Islamic perspective that addresses moral crises, intolerance, and the spiritual void among youth. Inclusivity and rational action are key to ensuring that religious activities generate real social impact.
From Thought to Action in the Academic Sphere
IMM also stresses the importance of intellectual productivity as a measure of its movement's effectiveness. Universities, as the movement's foundation, should be hubs of research, critical discourse, and practical contributions to public problem-solving.
"Our cadres are not just active in forums; they influence political decisions and collective awareness," Akbar said.
IMM positions itself as a movement of knowledge, not just symbolic action.
Social Engagement and Support for Muhammadiyah Congress
On the societal front, IMM promotes activities that empower communities, advocate for public interests, and support marginalized groups.
"Being active is not enough; our movement must be recognized by the broader society," Akbar stressed.
The 62nd-anniversary theme aligns with the major agenda of the 49th Muhammadiyah Congress, scheduled for 2027 in North Sumatra. IMM acts as a cadre-based movement and an integral part of Muhammadiyah, ensuring continuity of the reform agenda.
IMM supports the Congress through cadre consolidation, strengthening intellectual narratives, and active participation in organizational preparation. Strategic backing also comes from Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara (UMSU) under Prof. Dr. Agussani, M.Ap., showcasing readiness for the successful implementation of Muhammadiyah's agenda.
"IMM's 62nd anniversary calls all cadres to transform from a merely present movement into one that creates significance. By acting and making every initiative impactful, IMM reaffirms its role as a moral-intellectual force for Indonesia today and in the future," Akbar concluded. (IDNC)
