DRUG SMUGGLING FOILED: Indonesian Navy personnel from the Tanjung Balai Karimun Naval Base and the Kodaeral IV Quick Response Team display confiscated methamphetamine and ecstasy following the successful interception of a drug smuggling operation from Malaysia in the waters off Karimun, Kepulauan Riau Province.

BATAM | INDATANEWS.COM The Indonesian Navy (TNI AL) has once again demonstrated its commitment to combating transnational drug trafficking after successfully intercepting a shipment of methamphetamine and ecstasy allegedly smuggled from Malaysia through the waters off Karimun, Kepulauan Riau Province.

The operation was carried out jointly by the Quick Response Team of Naval Regional Command IV (Kodaeral IV) and personnel from the Tanjung Balai Karimun Naval Base. Their efforts led to the disruption of a drug trafficking network operating along the maritime border between Indonesia and Malaysia.

Rear Admiral TNI Berkat Widjanarko, Commander of Naval Regional Command IV, commended all personnel involved in the successful operation. The recognition was delivered during a press conference held on Friday, June 12, 2026, at the headquarters of the Tanjung Balai Karimun Naval Base.

The event was attended by representatives from local government agencies, Customs and Excise, the National Police, the Prosecutor's Office, and the National Narcotics Agency (BNN).

Public Tip-Off Triggers Investigation

Authorities launched the operation after receiving reports from local residents regarding suspected illegal activities along the maritime route connecting Malaysia and Indonesia.

Following the tip-off, the Kodaeral IV Quick Response Team intensified surveillance and interdiction efforts around Pulau Takong Iyu Kecil in Karimun Regency, an area considered highly vulnerable to cross-border crimes due to its proximity to international waters.

The operation formed part of the Indonesian Navy's ongoing efforts to safeguard national maritime territory from illegal activities.

At approximately 11:30 a.m. local time on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, naval personnel detected a fiberglass speedboat powered by a 40-horsepower engine traveling from Tanjung Piai, Johor, Malaysia, toward Indonesian waters.

Suspicious movements prompted officers to pursue and intercept the vessel for inspection.

Drugs Hidden Inside Cooler Box

During a thorough search of the speedboat, officers discovered a concealed stash of narcotics hidden inside a blue cooler box onboard.

Authorities seized 1,084 grams of methamphetamine and 582 "Hellcat" ecstasy pills. Investigators also confiscated the speedboat, two mobile phones, identification documents belonging to the suspect, the cooler box used to conceal the drugs, and Rp3.144 million in cash.

The suspect, identified only by the initials AK, a 67-year-old fisherman from Karimun Regency, was taken into custody and is currently facing further criminal investigation.

Kepulauan Riau has long been regarded as a strategic area frequently targeted by international drug syndicates due to its close proximity to several neighboring countries.

Operation Prevents Drugs from Reaching Thousands

Rear Admiral Berkat Widjanarko emphasized that the successful interception reflects the Indonesian Navy's unwavering determination to protect the country's waters from drug trafficking activities.

"This achievement demonstrates the Indonesian Navy's commitment to safeguarding national waters from the dangers of drug smuggling," Widjanarko said.

Authorities estimate that the seizure prevented approximately 12,000 young people from being exposed to illegal narcotics. The confiscated drugs are believed to have a street value of around Rp1.9 billion.

The Navy also announced plans to further strengthen patrol and surveillance operations in border waters as part of broader efforts to combat transnational crime and maintain national security.

Following preliminary investigations, the suspect and all evidence were handed over to Karimun Police for further legal proceedings.

The case highlights the importance of close cooperation between the Navy, police, customs authorities, prosecutors, anti-narcotics agencies, and local communities in combating international drug trafficking. Authorities continue to encourage the public to report suspicious activities to help maintain security in coastal and border regions. (IDNC)
