JAMBI | INDATANEWS.COM ~ The number of fraud cases targeting small and medium enterprises (SMEs/UMKM) in Jambi City is rising sharply, with criminals deploying increasingly varied schemes to exploit 24-hour kiosks, commonly known as "Madura shops."

Rising Fraud Targeting SMEs in Jambi

Small business owners across Jambi report a growing pattern of scams affecting 24-hour retail operations. Perpetrators often move from one shop to another after a failed attempt, making it difficult for merchants to track or prevent repeat offenses. The trend has raised concerns among local traders who rely on continuous business operations.

Sophisticated Scams Exploit 24-Hour Stores

Fraudsters are using increasingly deceptive methods, including fake bank transfers, manipulation of cash change, and digital payment deception. In one common scheme, perpetrators claim to have transferred 500,000 rupiah, while only 500 rupiah is actually sent.

"When we tell them the transfer is only 500 instead of 500,000, they immediately run away and look for another victim. Some even return later," said Santi, a shop owner in East Jambi.

Other tactics include falsely claiming larger cash payments while providing smaller amounts, often aided by distraction techniques or lack of CCTV monitoring. Some groups, typically consisting of three to five individuals, coordinate to create confusion while stealing goods.

Fraudsters have also exploited digital payment systems by pretending to complete transactions and then fleeing under the excuse of forgetting their wallets. In addition, counterfeit money remains a recurring issue, especially during busy hours. In some cases, individuals even claim to be locals or have ties with law enforcement to demand discounts or informal "protection" payments.

Losses Reach Millions, Calls for Stronger Protection

A recent incident in the Handil area on Friday, April 24, 2026, at around 7:00 p.m. resulted in losses amounting to several million rupiah. The fraud was only discovered during a shift change, after the perpetrators had already left the scene.

"Fraud cases in Jambi are very diverse, and most victims are SME owners," Santi added.

SME actor Rosmin has urged authorities and law enforcement to take stronger action to protect small business owners. He noted that despite circulation of suspect images on social media, there has been little deterrent effect.

He also emphasized the importance of SMEs to the local economy. "The government should be grateful because SMEs keep the economy running and create jobs," Rosmin said.

Another trader, Ali, pointed to economic pressures such as unemployment and the desire for quick money as contributing factors behind the rising crime.

As fraud cases continue to increase, local traders are calling for improved security measures to ensure they can operate their businesses safely and without fear of further losses. (IDNC)
