Telanaipura Police Arrest Suspect in Fatal Assault Case in Jambi

SUSPECT ARRESTED: Police officers arrest suspect R alias M in connection with the assault case that resulted in the death of resident Yakub bin Bakri in Penyengat Rendah, Jambi City.

JAMBI | INDATANEWS.COM - Officers from the Telanaipura Police, under the Jambi City Police and Jambi Provincial Police, have arrested a 50-year-old man identified by the initials R alias M. He is suspected of being involved in an assault that resulted in the death of a resident in Penyengat Rendah, Telanaipura District, Jambi City.

Jambi City Police Chief Commissioner Ananto Herlambang, through Telanaipura Police Chief Commissioner Amran, confirmed that the case had been uncovered. The suspect was arrested after his family handed him over to the police on Tuesday, October 6, 2026.

"It is true that on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, at around 3:00 p.m. WIB, we arrested a suspect identified by the initials R alias M, 50. He is suspected of being involved in an assault case in which the victim died," the Telanaipura Police chief said.

The incident that claimed the victim's life occurred one day earlier, on Monday, October 5, 2026, at around 3:30 p.m. WIB. The incident took place in RT 01, Penyengat Rendah, Telanaipura District, Jambi City.

The victim was identified as Yakub bin Bakri, 37. He was a local resident who worked as a laborer. Police are investigating the case based on a report concerning an alleged assault involving a sharp weapon.

Following the incident, the victim received medical treatment at a hospital. However, the medical treatment could not save his life. The victim eventually died from the injuries he sustained in the incident.

Police Pick Up Suspect at Jambi Provincial Police Headquarters

The investigation began after the Telanaipura Police response team received information from the reporting desk of the Jambi Provincial Police regarding the suspect's whereabouts. Earlier, R alias M had been handed over to the police by his family. At the time, the suspect was at the reporting desk of the Jambi Provincial Police.

Telanaipura Police Chief Commissioner Amran then led the operation together with the Criminal Investigation Unit Chief, Second Police Inspector Zulhadi. After receiving the information, the officers immediately went to the Jambi Provincial Police reporting desk to pick up the suspect and place him in custody.

The officers subsequently brought the suspect to the Jambi City Police headquarters. Investigators conducted an interrogation and continued the investigation to establish the complete sequence of events that led to the victim's death.

According to police, the suspect, R alias M, is 50 years old. He works as a chicken seller at Aurduri Market and lives on Jalan Jepang in Danau Teluk District, Jambi City.

Police also seized several items believed to be connected to the case. The evidence included a kitchen knife and a cap.

Suspect Faces Up to 12 Years in Prison

In handling the case, police are applying Article 458 Paragraph 1 and/or Article 466 Paragraph 3 of Law Number 1 of 2023 concerning the Criminal Code (KUHP).

The provisions concern assault-related offenses resulting in the death of a person. Based on the allegations against him, the suspect faces a maximum prison sentence of 12 years.

The Telanaipura Police are continuing the investigation to complete the case file. Police will also coordinate with the prosecutor's office or the authorized prosecutor as part of the subsequent legal process.

Telanaipura Police Chief Commissioner Amran emphasized that police would handle the case in accordance with applicable laws and regulations. At the same time, he urged the public not to take matters into their own hands against individuals suspected of committing crimes.

"We urge the public not to take matters into their own hands and to leave the entire legal process to the police authorities. Let us work together to maintain public security and order in Jambi City so that conditions remain safe and stable," Commissioner Amran said in closing.

Police reminded the public to resolve conflicts and other disputes through established legal channels. This is important to prevent conflicts from escalating while ensuring that every case is handled based on established facts and applicable laws and regulations.

The securing of the suspect marks an initial step by police in uncovering the assault case that resulted in the death of Yakub bin Bakri. In the next stage, investigators will further examine statements from the individuals involved, analyze the evidence and complete the investigation file before handing the case over to the prosecutor's office.
