MEDAN | INDATANEWS.COM – The City Government of Medan has reaffirmed its commitment to a comprehensive and integrated development plan for the Belawan District. The initiative prioritizes infrastructure expansion alongside social welfare, education, and environmental sustainability, aiming to transform Belawan into a cleaner, more modern, and economically competitive urban area.
Vice Mayor,
Zakiyuddin Harahap emphasized the importance of close cooperation between local authorities and civil society during a hearing with the social network Kolaborasi
Belawan Berkah (KBB) at his residence on Jalan Gurilla, Medan Perjuangan District, Friday (June 5, 2026).
He praised KBB's ongoing social initiatives, particularly its weekly assistance programs for underprivileged residents in Belawan. According to him, sustained collaboration between stakeholders is essential to achieve long-term and meaningful change in the coastal region.
"Belawan is a beautiful area if we develop it together. We ask
KBB to support the city government's programs so that all efforts can move in harmony with community-based activities," Zakiyuddin said, in the presence of Head of Kesbangpol Andi Mario and Head of the Youth and Sports Agency (Kadispora) T. Chairuniza.
Infrastructure Development and Education Reform as Core PrioritiesAs part of its development blueprint, the Medan administration is prioritizing infrastructure upgrades, particularly improvements to drainage systems to mitigate recurring flooding and enhance urban order.
In parallel, the education sector is receiving increased attention. The government plans to introduce environmental education programs and construct new schools in coastal areas, aiming not only to expand access to education but also to foster early environmental awareness among children.
"We will build new schools in coastal areas. Prior to that, we will strengthen environmental education so awareness of both education and environmental responsibility is cultivated from an early age," Zakiyuddin explained.
Investment Growth and Firm Anti-Drug MeasuresThe city government is also working to position Belawan as an attractive destination for investment. Improved urban infrastructure and better public order are expected to encourage investors and drive sustainable economic growth for local communities.
At the same time, authorities have underscored a firm stance on combating drug-related crimes. The public and community organizations are encouraged to actively report any suspected illegal activities.
"Drug eradication is also one of our priorities. The public and
KBB should not hesitate to report drug trafficking cases," he stressed.
KBB Pledges Continued Support for Government ProgramsChairman of Kolaborasi Belawan Berkah (KBB), Tengku Zakaria, stated that the initiative emerged from a strong commitment to support disadvantaged coastal communities. The organization now operates independently and has established its own office to coordinate activities more effectively.
"We hope these social activities continue to improve public welfare. We welcome the Medan City Government's programs and are ready to collaborate," he said.
KBB positions itself as a strategic partner to the government, particularly in strengthening social welfare programs and supporting low-income households in coastal areas.
