Medan Launches 1,061 Village Cooperatives in Nationwide Economic Push

MEDAN | INDATANEWS.COM Deputy Mayor of Medan, Zakiyuddin Harahap, attended the official inauguration of the Red and White Village and Urban Cooperatives (Koperasi Desa Kelurahan Merah Putih/KDKMP), held on Saturday (May 16, 2026) at Jalan Lizardi Putra, Tanjung Selamat Village, Medan Tuntungan District.

The event was also attended by North Sumatra Governor Muhammad Bobby Afif Nasution, Military Commander of the I/Bukit Barisan Regional Command Major General TNI Hendy Antariksa, North Sumatra Police Chief Inspector General Pol Whisnu Hermawan Februanto, Medan Police Chief Commissioner Pol Jean Calvijn Simanjuntak, and Medan District Military Commander Lieutenant Colonel Arm Delli Yudha Adi Nurcahyo, along with other regional officials.

National Rollout of 1,061 Cooperatives

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto simultaneously inaugurated a total of 1,061 KDKMP units from Nglawak Village, Kertosono District, Nganjuk Regency, East Java. The nationwide launch was symbolically marked by the pressing of a siren button, activating the cooperatives across multiple regions.

Prabowo emphasized that the initiative represents a major milestone in strengthening Indonesia's grassroots economy. He stressed that the program goes beyond constructing cooperative buildings, aiming instead to build an integrated economic ecosystem that directly benefits local communities.

"Today we inaugurate more than a thousand cooperatives equipped with warehouses, distribution systems, vehicles, and logistical support. This is a major step toward building the national economy from the grassroots level," the President said.

Strengthening Economic Independence

President Prabowo Subianto further highlighted Indonesia's growing capacity to strengthen its economic independence through the rapid development of thousands of cooperatives. He noted that the country holds strong potential to build its economic resilience from within.

He also pointed to the improving stability of national food security despite global challenges, stating that Indonesia currently holds one of the largest rice reserves in its history.

Focus on Food Security

The government reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the role of village and urban cooperatives, particularly in supporting farmers. This includes improving access to fertilizers, financing, and agricultural market distribution systems.

"Food is a matter of life and death for a nation. That is why I place great emphasis on food security and the people's economy," Prabowo said in closing. (IDNC)
