DELI SERDANG | INDATANEWS.COM - The Deli Serdang Regency Government is supporting the North Sumatra Provincial Government in its efforts to achieve rabies-free status by 2030. As part of the effort, Deli Serdang participated in a large-scale vaccination campaign targeting 15,000 animals capable of transmitting rabies.
The vaccination campaign was a key part of the celebrations for Animal Husbandry Month and
World Rabies Day 2026. The event was held on Sunday, September 27, 2026, at the Astaka Sports Field in Medan Estate Village.
In addition to the mass rabies vaccination campaign, the event also featured the establishment of a record recognized by the Museum Rekor-Dunia Indonesia (MURI), Indonesia's record museum. The government and various stakeholders also used the event to raise public awareness about the importance of animal health and zoonotic disease prevention.
For
Deli Serdang, participation in the event is part of the regency government's commitment to supporting rabies control efforts and protecting the health of people, animals and the environment.
Deli Serdang Strengthens Rabies Prevention
Deli Serdang Regional Secretary Dedi Maswardy said Animal Husbandry Month and
World Rabies Day 2026 provided direct benefits to the community. In addition to veterinary services, the event also improved public understanding of diseases that can be transmitted from animals to humans.
"Thank you to the North Sumatra Provincial Government for its recognition and support. Events like this are very helpful to the community, especially because they provide direct access to veterinary services," Dedi said.
According to Dedi, the
Deli Serdang Regency Government continues to support various
animal health and zoonotic disease prevention programs. The support includes vaccinations, veterinary services and public education.
Dedi also urged residents to have their animals regularly vaccinated against rabies through Animal Health Centers (Puskeswan). Pet owners were also encouraged to pay close attention to the health of their animals and monitor their condition regularly to reduce the risk of disease transmission.
These measures are important because rabies control requires active community participation. Regular vaccination of animals can help reduce the risk of rabies transmission to humans.
In addition to vaccinations, participants received free examinations and treatment for their animals. Veterinary personnel also provided sterilization services for cats and dogs as part of the veterinary care offered at the event.

15,000 Vaccinations Set MURI Record
The mass vaccination of 15,000 animals capable of transmitting rabies was one of the main highlights of the celebrations. The number of vaccinations also demonstrated the scale of cooperation established to improve protection for animals against rabies.
The vaccination campaign set a record recognized by the Museum Rekor-Dunia Indonesia (MURI). The achievement was also used as an opportunity to further strengthen public awareness of rabies prevention.
The event provided various services for animal owners. Free examinations and treatment gave residents direct access to veterinary care. Sterilization services for cats and dogs also supported efforts to control animal populations.
The organizers also held a joint egg consumption activity involving a total of 10,000 eggs. The activity brought together issues of animal health and food security as part of a public event involving the community.
Nuryani Zainuddin, Secretary of the Directorate General of Livestock and Animal Health at the Indonesian Ministry of Agriculture, said rabies could be controlled and prevented through various measures. One of the most important measures, she said, was vaccination.
However, rabies control cannot rely on vaccination alone. According to Nuryani, the government must also strengthen disease surveillance and monitoring, improve case reporting, control populations of animals capable of transmitting rabies, and ensure appropriate treatment for people who have been bitten by animals.
In 2026, the Ministry of Agriculture provided a total of 25,000 doses of rabies vaccine for animals. North Sumatra also received support in the form of an additional 30,000 vaccine doses.
Nuryani said regional governments and all stakeholders involved must continue increasing vaccination coverage so that the rabies control program can be implemented optimally. Public participation is also essential to ensure that animals capable of transmitting rabies are protected through vaccination.

Joint Efforts Toward a Rabies-Free North Sumatra in 2030
North Sumatra Deputy Governor Surya said rabies control requires cross-sectoral cooperation. The North Sumatra Provincial Government cannot achieve its target of becoming rabies-free by 2030 without support from regency and city governments as well as various segments of society.
"The goal of making North Sumatra rabies-free by 2030 will not be achieved if it is solely the responsibility of the government. It requires joint efforts from all regencies and cities, professional organizations, universities, businesses, communities and the public," he said.
The North Sumatra Provincial Government has committed to ensuring the availability of rabies vaccines in all regencies and cities. In addition,
animal health centers will be strengthened, the capacity of medical personnel will be improved, and systems for reporting and providing rapid and appropriate treatment for cases will be enhanced.
Surya also emphasized the importance of the One Health approach in rabies control. The approach connects human, animal and environmental health so that preventive measures can be implemented in an integrated manner.
"Let us continue strengthening cooperation through the One Health approach so that human, animal and environmental health can be protected in harmony. In this way, we aim to create a healthy North Sumatra, an increasingly prosperous livestock sector, and together achieve the goal of making
North Sumatra rabies-free by 2030," he said in closing.
During the event, North Sumatra Governor Muhammad Bobby Afif Nasution also presented a certificate of recognition to Deli Serdang Regent Asri Ludin Tambunan. The recognition was given for his dedication and contribution to supporting animal health, zoonotic disease control and regional food security.
