DELI SERDANG | INDATANEWS.COM - The Deli Serdang Regency Government is strengthening support for the 2026 Economic Census after the Deli Serdang Statistics Agency (BPS) encountered several obstacles during field data collection. The enhanced support is focused particularly on the business sector, where the actual coverage rate remains below 50 percent.
The measure was one of the issues discussed during an audience between
Deli Serdang Regent dr. H. Asri Ludin Tambunan and Head of the
Deli Serdang Statistics Agency Elly Suharyadi on Friday, August 21, 2026.
At the meeting, Elly explained the preliminary progress of data collection for the 2026 Economic Census. According to him, overall data collection has progressed satisfactorily. However, field officers are still facing several challenges that require support from the regional government so that data collection can be carried out more efficiently.
BPS has identified several buildings that have yet to be located by field officers. In addition, some business owners and residents are still reluctant to provide the data required by census officers. This situation is of particular concern because complete data is essential to ensuring the quality of the
2026 Economic Census results.
Data collection in the household sector has been progressing well. In contrast, the business sector requires greater attention, as its actual coverage rate has yet to reach 50 percent. The regional government and BPS therefore believe that support must be further strengthened to facilitate field officers' access to locations and businesses that have not yet been covered.
Business Sector Remains a Focus
Elly explained that the challenges in data collection were not solely related to buildings or businesses that had not yet been reached. The varying forms of economic activity in certain areas also meant that field officers needed different approaches in terms of timing and methodology, depending on the location.
One of the areas presenting particular challenges is the MMTC complex, where economic activities continue into the night and early morning, including a night market. Under these circumstances, field officers need support to reach business owners at the times when their economic activities are actually taking place.
The Deli Serdang Government views this as a task requiring cross-sector coordination. Regional agencies, subdistrict administrations and the Forum for Coordination of Regional Leadership at the subdistrict level (Forkopimcam) are expected to assist BPS field officers so that data collection does not stall because of access issues, collection schedules or local conditions.
Deli Serdang Regent dr. H. Asri Ludin Tambunan emphasized that the regional government had supported field operations since the beginning of the census. However, findings in the field showed that this support needed to be expanded until the entire data collection process was completed.
"We have supported the field operation from the beginning. If there are still areas that have not been covered, we need to strengthen that support," he said.
The regent called on regional agencies, subdistricts and Forkopimcam to actively assist BPS field officers in reaching areas where difficulties remain. He specifically highlighted border areas, plantation regions and business locations that require special approaches during data collection.
In his view, the involvement of the regional government is important not only to facilitate access but also to build communication with residents and business owners. With this support, BPS field officers are expected to conduct data collection more effectively and obtain the information required.

Coordination With Subdistricts to Begin
The move to strengthen support subsequently received backing from
Deli Serdang Assistant for Economic and Development Affairs Hendra Wijaya. He said the regency government would immediately coordinate with subdistrict heads to ensure that the necessary support could be provided in their respective areas.
The coordination will focus particularly on locations where buildings have yet to be found by field officers, as well as areas where residents have not yet been reached. Subdistrict administrations will also help establish contact between field officers and relevant parties so that data collection can continue without major obstacles.
This step is part of the
Deli Serdang Government's efforts to ensure that all areas and economic activities covered by the census are recorded as comprehensively as possible. The regional government has also called on subdistrict-level authorities to immediately follow up on information regarding locations that still require special attention.
Following the audience, the Deli Serdang Government continued coordination with relevant parties via video conference. The coordination is part of efforts to accelerate the resolution of various issues that continue to emerge during the implementation of the 2026 Economic Census.

Economic Data as a Foundation for Development
The
Deli Serdang Government reaffirmed its commitment to supporting BPS until the entire data collection process is completed. According to the regional government, the success of the census depends not only on the work of field officers but also on the participation of residents and business owners, as well as support from government institutions at all levels.
Complete economic data plays an important role in portraying economic conditions and business activities across Deli Serdang Regency. The data collected can later serve as one of the foundations for government decision-making and the planning of development programs that are better aligned with the region's economic conditions.
Therefore, the regional government is calling on all individuals and businesses included in the census to provide the information required by BPS field officers. The participation of residents and business owners will help provide a more comprehensive picture of the regional economy while reducing the risk of individual economic sectors or activities being overlooked during data collection.
The strengthened support is also expected to help resolve problems encountered in the field, ranging from buildings that have yet to be located and business owners who have not provided data to locations where economic activities take place at night and in the early morning.
Through coordination among the
Deli Serdang Government, BPS, regional agencies, subdistrict administrations and Forkopimcam, the implementation of the
2026 Economic Census is expected to be further optimized. The regional government hopes that this support will help BPS complete the data collection process and provide comprehensive and accurate
economic data as a basis for development planning in
Deli Serdang.
