MEDAN | INDATANEWS.COM - Medan Mayor, Rico Waas, has welcomed the planned implementation of the Lion Club Children's Day Celebration on Sunday, July 26, 2026, at Merdeka Square in Medan. The event, which will be held alongside the Car-Free-Day (CFD) program, is considered a positive initiative to strengthen public awareness regarding children's development and well-being.
Rico Waas expressed his support during a meeting with Lion Club representatives at the Medan Mayor's official residence on Friday, July 10, 2026. The meeting was attended by Lion Club representatives Jones Tjiunardi and Ika R. Dewi, along with other members of the organization.
According to Rico Waas, children are an important asset for the nation's future that requires attention and support from all elements of society. He emphasized that the rapid advancement of technology has created new challenges in educating and guiding children.
Strengthening Safe Spaces for Children
Rico Waas explained that children today are experiencing changes in their social interactions due to the intensive use of digital technology. This condition makes the availability of safe, healthy, and supportive spaces for children's growth increasingly important.
"Children are something precious. However, sometimes we still lack awareness of their needs. Today, they are more frequently exposed to digital content and gadgets. Therefore, we must continue creating safe and healthy spaces for children,"
Rico Waas said.
He explained that technology provides many benefits in daily life, particularly in the education sector. However, without proper guidance, excessive use of technology can also affect the way children interact with their surroundings.
Therefore,
Rico Waas encouraged various community elements to create activities that combine education, entertainment, and social interaction. In his view, direct engagement with children can help strengthen their character and improve their social skills.
"Activities like these are very beneficial because they provide children with the right space to play, learn, and interact with one another. Such initiatives must continue to receive support," he said.
Medan Government Provides Fire Safety and Traffic Education
As a form of support for the event, Rico Waas stated that the Medan City Government would actively contribute to ensuring the success of the Lion Club Children's Day Celebration.
The
Medan City Government will provide a fire truck as an educational facility for children. Through this program, children will have the opportunity to learn about the duties and functions of firefighters while developing an early understanding of safety awareness.
In addition, the city government will invite participants to visit the Integrated Traffic Control (ITC) facility. The visit is expected to introduce children to how technology is utilized in managing urban traffic systems.
This initiative is part of the
Medan City Government's efforts to provide meaningful learning experiences for children. The government hopes the event will not only offer entertainment but also deliver valuable knowledge to all participants.
Children's Day Celebration Expected to Attract Thousands
The Children's Day Celebration organized by the Lion Club will take place at Merdeka Square in Medan simultaneously with the Car-Free-Day program. The selection of the location is expected to provide easier access and encourage broader public participation.
The event is targeted to involve around 1,000 children. The organizing committee has prepared various services to support children's needs, including health check-ups, nutritional counseling, child violence prevention education, as well as free food and milk distribution.
Through this series of activities, the Lion Club aims to further increase public awareness of the importance of children's health, protection, and development.
Rico Waas views collaboration between the government, social organizations, and the community as a key factor in creating a better environment for children. He hopes similar activities will continue to be developed and become positive spaces for the younger generation in Medan. (IDNC)
