MEDAN | INDATANEWS.COM - PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Persero) Regional 1 has reaffirmed its commitment to environmental sustainability by organizing an environmental competition in Medan Belawan District. A total of 143 neighborhood units (RTs) from six urban villages are participating in the competition, which aims to promote cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable coastal communities.

Through this initiative, Pelindo Regional 1 seeks to strengthen public participation in maintaining neighborhood cleanliness, improve environmental quality, and foster long-term awareness of environmental conservation. The program also aligns with the company's Social and Environmental Responsibility (TJSL) initiatives and its consistent implementation of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles, which form an integral part of its sustainability strategy.

The competition serves not only as a contest among participating neighborhoods but also as an educational platform that encourages residents to take an active role in creating healthier, greener, and more livable communities. Encouraging Active Community Participation

The Manager of Legal and Public Relations at PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Persero) Regional 1, Fadillah Haryono, said the environmental competition represents the company's tangible commitment to strengthening public awareness of sustainable environmental protection.

"Through this environmental competition, we hope to encourage greater community participation in creating a clean, healthy, and sustainable living environment. At the same time, this initiative reflects the joint commitment of Pelindo, the government, and all stakeholders to further develop Belawan," Fadillah said.

According to him, the success of sustainable environmental programs depends not only on government policies or corporate initiatives but also on the active involvement of residents within their respective neighborhoods. Therefore, Pelindo Regional 1 continues to develop community-based programs that strengthen collective responsibility while fostering a culture of mutual cooperation in protecting the environment.

The company also expects the competition to inspire new ideas and innovations from local communities, ranging from improved waste management and urban greening initiatives to other environmental programs that enhance the quality of life in Belawan's coastal areas.

Nine Stakeholders Involved in Evaluation

To ensure a comprehensive assessment, Pelindo Regional 1 has involved nine stakeholders from various sectors in the judging process. The panel consists of representatives from government agencies, relevant institutions, and community organizations actively engaged in environmental management.

Participants are evaluated based on several criteria, including neighborhood cleanliness, waste and environmental management, community participation, and innovative environmental conservation initiatives.

By involving multiple institutions, Pelindo Regional 1 aims to ensure that the evaluation process remains objective, transparent, and accountable. This approach provides equal opportunities for every participating neighborhood to demonstrate its commitment to creating a cleaner and healthier living environment.

Beyond determining the winners, the evaluation process is expected to motivate residents to continue improving their surroundings and maintain sustainable environmental practices long after the competition concludes.
