DELI SERDANG | INDATANEWS.COM - The Family Empowerment and Welfare Movement (TP PKK) of North Sumatra Province, together with the TP PKK of Deli Serdang Regency, is supporting the development of cassava chips as a value-added local processed product. The initiative is being carried out through skills training and the provision of production equipment for the community.
The North Sumatra Provincial TP PKK organized training on product processing and skills tailored to the potential of each region as part of the work program of Working Group II (Pokja II). The training, which focused on cassava chip production, was held on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, at the hall of the Delitua Subdistrict Head's Office.
The training is part of efforts to empower the community to process the region's agricultural potential into products with greater economic value. In addition to providing knowledge about cassava processing, the program also introduced equipment that can help make the production process more efficient.
Chairwoman of the North Sumatra Provincial TP PKK,
Kahiyang Ayu Bobby Nasution, also supported the activity and handed over several pieces of production equipment. The assistance included two cassava slicing machines, a stove and gas cylinder, a wok and ladle, as well as various other equipment and materials needed to produce cassava chips.
Training Enhances Community Skills
The cassava chip production training provides the community with an opportunity to further develop its skills in processing food products based on local resources. Cassava, which is often sold as a fresh food commodity, offers greater economic potential when processed into ready-to-eat products.
During the training, participants received knowledge and practical skills that they can directly apply to the cassava chip production process. Mastering proper processing techniques is also an important factor in maintaining product quality and producing goods that are competitive and attractive to consumers.
The
Deli Serdang TP PKK welcomed the support from the North Sumatra Provincial TP PKK. Chairwoman of the
Deli Serdang TP PKK, Jelita Asri Ludin Tambunan, said the assistance could help community members develop local business opportunities, particularly in cassava processing.
"Alhamdulillah, today we received two cassava slicing machines that can later be used to process cassava into chips. These machines are expected to make the production process faster and cleaner while also improving product quality," she said.
According to Jelita, the production equipment will make it easier for community members to process raw materials into cassava chips. The slicing machines, for example, can speed up the slicing process while producing more uniform cassava slices.
The assistance also provides community groups with an opportunity to gradually increase their production capacity. With suitable equipment, time and labor can be used more efficiently during processing, allowing the overall production process to run more effectively.

Promoting Local Products with Higher Market Value
The development of cassava chips is not limited to improving food processing skills. The program also provides the community with opportunities to establish businesses based on local potential.
Processing cassava into chips allows for the production of a product with a different shelf life and selling value compared with selling cassava as a raw commodity. This creates opportunities for entrepreneurs to expand their marketing efforts while reaching new markets.
Jelita hopes the community will make sustainable use of the training and equipment provided. She said the assistance needs to be accompanied by consistent efforts to maintain product quality and increase production capacity.
She also hopes cassava chips produced by the people of Deli Serdang can be developed into a higher-quality product. With proper management, the product could become one of the business opportunities available to the community while strengthening the utilization of local raw materials.
"I hope production will continue to increase, quality will continue to improve, and community businesses will continue to grow," she said.
The expectation is in line with the objective of the training, which is not only to provide the community with technical skills but also to encourage the use of regional potential to create new economic opportunities. The development of processed products also requires continuous coordination between skills, available production equipment, raw material quality and the community's entrepreneurial capabilities.

Collaboration Strengthens Economic Potential
The collaboration between the North Sumatra Provincial TP PKK and the
Deli Serdang TP PKK is an important part of efforts to support community skills development. The program, implemented through Working Group II (Pokja II), provides community members with opportunities to gain both knowledge and support in the form of production equipment.
The provision of production equipment can also serve as an initial step for the community to develop processing activities in a more structured manner. Optimal use of the equipment is expected to improve production efficiency and contribute to the consistent quality of cassava chips.
The event was also attended by Head of Staff I of the
Deli Serdang TP PKK, Asniar Lom Lom Suwondo, representatives of the
Deli Serdang TP PKK, as well as members of Working Group II (Pokja II) of the
Deli Serdang TP PKK.
Through training and support in the form of production equipment, the development of cassava chips in Deli Serdang is expected to continue beyond the training session. The community can apply the skills acquired to sustain production, improve product quality and develop new business opportunities based on the region's potential.
The initiative also strengthens the community's role in processing agricultural raw materials into products with greater added value. With support in the form of technical knowledge, appropriate equipment and sustainable business management, cassava chips could become one of the processed products capable of providing economic benefits to communities in
Deli Serdang.
