MEDAN | INDATANEWS.COM - Class I Medan Correctional Institution (Lapas) has once again demonstrated its commitment to supporting food security through agricultural programs as part of its inmate rehabilitation initiatives. This time, inmates successfully harvested 20 bundles of water spinach (kangkung) and three kilograms of eggplants cultivated on the institution's agricultural training land.
The harvest was carried out alongside Prayoga Yulanda, Head of the Rehabilitation Division at Class I Medan Correctional Institution, and his team. The activity forms part of the institution's ongoing efforts to maximize the use of available land while supporting the national food security program within Indonesia's correctional system.
The program is designed not only to optimize the productive use of agricultural land but also to provide inmates with practical training in farming. Through regular agricultural activities, participants gain hands-on experience throughout every stage of cultivation, from land preparation and crop maintenance to harvesting.

Agriculture as a Path to Self-Reliance
Class I Medan Correctional Institution continues to expand its self-reliance development program, recognizing it as a key component of inmate rehabilitation during incarceration. Agriculture has become one of its primary focus areas because it provides long-term vocational skills while fostering personal development.
Through agricultural activities, inmates acquire practical knowledge of modern farming techniques while developing discipline, responsibility, teamwork, and a productive work ethic. The entire cultivation process is closely supervised, allowing participants to gain comprehensive experience in crop management from planting to harvest.
The successful harvest of water spinach and eggplants demonstrates the effective implementation of the institution's rehabilitation program. Beyond producing agricultural commodities, the initiative teaches inmates the importance of responsible and sustainable resource management.
The agriculture-based vocational training program also reflects a rehabilitation approach centered on empowerment and self-reliance. The knowledge and skills acquired are expected to help former inmates build independent and productive lives after their release.
Commitment to Food Security
Prayoga Yulanda, Head of the Rehabilitation Division at Class I Medan Correctional Institution, said the successful harvest reflects the institution's consistent commitment to making optimal use of its available resources.
"This harvest is tangible proof of Class I Medan Correctional Institution's commitment to maximizing the use of vocational training land so that it serves both as an educational facility and as a sustainable contribution to food security within the correctional system," Prayoga said.
According to him, the institution's food security program contributes not only to agricultural production but also to strengthening inmates' vocational competencies. The skills they acquire are expected to provide greater opportunities for them to rebuild independent lives upon returning to society.
The consistent utilization of the agricultural training land also demonstrates the institution's commitment to implementing sustainable and productive rehabilitation programs. Through these activities, inmates gain valuable practical experience while contributing to the production of quality agricultural products.
