SIMALUNGUN | INDATANEWS.COM - A warm and family-oriented atmosphere marked the activities of students from the Universitas Islam Negeri Sumatera Utara (UINSU) during their "Kuliah Kerja Nyata" (KKN) community service program in Huta III Dolok Village, Boluk Nagori, Bosar Maligas District, Simalungun Regency. The students accompanied children in their educational activities and provided additional support for their learning.
During their KKN placement from July 28 to August 19, 2026, the students carried out educational assistance programs through afternoon tutoring and "Maghrib Mengaji," a Quran reading program held after the Maghrib prayer. The programs were part of the supporting activities conducted during the KKN and were designed to help children better understand school lessons while also improving their ability to read the Quran.
The educational assistance did not focus solely on classroom-style learning. Regular meetings also created a closer and more family-oriented learning environment between the KKN students and children in Huta III Dolok Village.
Afternoon Tutoring Helps Children Understand School Lessons
The coordinator of the KKN program in Huta III Dolok Village, M. Fikri Pratama, said the students provided tutoring and learning assistance every afternoon from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. The activities were held at the KKN post in Huta III Dolok Village.
"During these activities, the students accompany the children in studying their school lessons, help them understand material they find difficult, and assist them in completing their assignments," Fikri said in a press statement released on Saturday, September 19, 2026.
Through the learning assistance, the students sought to respond to the individual needs of the children. They re-explained lessons that had not been fully understood, assisted the children with their assignments, and provided opportunities for them to ask questions about topics they considered difficult.
The presence of the students during study sessions also provided the children with additional support outside their regular school hours. The children could use their afternoons to review lessons and receive assistance when they encountered difficulties in completing school assignments.
The activities were conducted regularly throughout the KKN placement. Through this form of assistance, the students were able to observe the children's progress while adapting the delivery of learning materials to the abilities of the participants.

"Maghrib Mengaji" Held at the Mosque
After the afternoon tutoring sessions ended, the KKN students continued their educational assistance through the "Maghrib Mengaji" program. The activity was held at Masjid Amal Huta III Dolok from 7 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Fikri said the students accompanied the children in reading the Quran while taking into account the individual abilities of each participant.
"During Maghrib Mengaji, the KKN students accompany the children in reading the Quran according to their respective abilities. The students also help improve their pronunciation and provide guidance throughout the learning process. The activities are conducted gradually so that the children can follow the lessons in a comfortable atmosphere," Fikri said.
The assistance was provided step by step so that the children could follow the learning process without pressure. When improvements were needed in Quran reading, the students provided appropriate guidance and helped the children better understand the correct methods of reading the Quran.
The Maghrib Mengaji program was also part of the students' efforts to combine general educational assistance with religious education. Through the program, the children received not only support in understanding school subjects but also opportunities to further develop their Quran reading skills.
The activities at Masjid Amal Huta III Dolok were conducted in a simple and practical atmosphere. The presence of the KKN students helped strengthen the relationship between the program participants and the children throughout their community service placement.

Children Participate Enthusiastically
Fikri said the entire series of activities was carried out in a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere. According to him, the children showed strong interest both during the tutoring sessions at the KKN post and during Quran lessons at Masjid Amal Huta III Dolok.
He said the children's active participation was one of the indicators used by the students to monitor the development of the program. The students also assessed the participants' progress in understanding school lessons and reading the Quran.
"The activities were evaluated based on the children's active participation and their development in reading the Quran as well as understanding school lessons. Based on the implementation, the program went well and received a positive response from the participating children," Fikri said.
The evaluation helped the students determine the extent to which the educational assistance benefited the children. In addition to academic abilities, the students also paid attention to the children's participation throughout the learning process.
The positive response from the children was one of the factors that encouraged the students to maintain a comfortable learning environment. The relaxed approach made it easier for the children to interact and participate in the activities without feeling pressured.
Through the Quran learning and afternoon tutoring programs, UINSU KKN students sought to provide activities that offered direct benefits to the community in Huta III Dolok Village. The assistance was also part of the students' social engagement in the field of education.
Fikri added that the UINSU KKN students not only helped the children understand school lessons but also accompanied them in improving their Quran reading skills during their stay in Huta III Dolok Village.
The program demonstrates how a KKN placement can provide students with an opportunity to engage directly with the community while contributing through educational assistance. For the children, the presence of the students provided additional learning support during the afternoon and evening hours.
With the conclusion of the KKN placement on August 19, 2026, the learning assistance conducted throughout the program left valuable experiences for both the students and participating children.
