MEDAN | INDATANEWS.COM - The Regional Leadership Board of the Federation of Chemical, Energy and Mining Trade Unions of the All-Indonesia Confederation of Trade Unions (PD FSP KEP SPSI) in North Sumatra Province has strengthened the organization's internal consolidation efforts. The move is aimed at further expanding the union's role in protecting workers and members. The consolidation meeting was held in Medan on Saturday, August 22, 2026.
The meeting provided the leadership board with an opportunity to evaluate the organization's development to date while also planning further steps to strengthen the union. The discussions focused on organizational development, expanding the network at the regency and city levels, and strengthening workplace units (Pimpinan Unit Kerja/PUK) within companies.
The Chairman of PD FSP KEP SPSI North Sumatra, Rio Affandi Siregar, said the leadership board for the 2024–2029 term had made significant progress over the past two years. This progress was reflected, among other things, in the organization's increasingly extensive network across various regions and companies.
"Over these two years, the activities of the Regional Leadership Board have been very intensive. In particular, we have established new PC FSP KEP SPSI structures in various regions, including at the company level. This means that efforts to strengthen the union and protect workers have so far progressed quite well," Rio told journalists. He was accompanied by Secretary Risnawati Nasution and Treasurer Dede Afriandi.
According to Rio, the development demonstrates that the leadership board has continued to carry out its organizational role in strengthening the position of workers' representatives. The organization's presence at the regency and company levels is also important to ensure that members receive advice, assistance and protection while carrying out their professional duties.
Leadership Performance and Potential in Focus
Rio said the consolidation meeting also served as a forum for evaluating the performance of the entire leadership board. In his view, each board member has individual abilities and strengths shaped by different backgrounds, personalities and professional experiences.
"We have to understand that we all come from different backgrounds. Where we have common ground, we should regard it as a strength to provide protection for workers and our members in all regencies and cities, as well as at the workplace-unit (PUK) level," Rio explained.
He emphasized that differences in personal and professional backgrounds should not become an obstacle to the organization's work. Instead, the diverse experiences and abilities of its members can provide an important foundation for collectively representing members' interests.
For that reason, the leadership board needs to identify the respective strengths of its members so that their abilities can be utilized to the fullest. By appropriately assigning responsibilities based on individual strengths, tasks can be distributed more effectively and forms of cooperation can be developed that complement one another.
Rio also underscored the importance of continuous communication among board members. The consolidation meeting was not merely an administrative gathering, but also an opportunity to establish a common understanding and strengthen organizational coordination from the provincial level down to individual companies.

Strengthening Union Consultation and Training
In addition to evaluating organizational development, regular consolidation is part of the effort to strengthen labor representation, educational programs and training for workers. Rio said this need applies to all levels of the organization, including the provincial, regency and city leadership boards, as well as PUK units within companies.
"This consolidation also serves to introduce several newly appointed board members, as well as those who have taken on new positions within the organizational structure. Through this process, we can better understand each person's potential and bring all of our abilities together," he said.
He expressed hope that the consolidation process would make the leadership board more united in implementing organizational programs. Strengthening the capabilities of union officials is also important so that each organizational level can respond appropriately to various labor-law and employment-related issues arising in the field.
To carry out these responsibilities, the union needs officials with a solid understanding of organizational work, strong representation skills and sufficient knowledge of workers' problems and concerns. For this reason, education and training are an integral part of strengthening the organization.
The Regional Leadership Board will also continue to promote communication with regency and city leadership boards and PUK units so that members' problems can be identified at an early stage. This approach will enable the organization to develop appropriate measures and provide more targeted assistance and support to workers.
Further Training for Board Members Planned

SPSI North Sumatra, Risnawati Nasution, said a special meeting to deepen organizational understanding is planned in the near future. The event will also provide board members with an opportunity to adjust their work programs to current developments and conditions.
"We are planning a form of training for the Regional Leadership Board. At the same time, we will continue visiting various regencies and PUK units to carry out organizational work in line with the program initiated by our chairman, Comrade Rio," Risnawati said.
Risnawati emphasized that internal strengthening would be carried out alongside organizational activities in various regencies and PUK units. The Regional Leadership Board will continue its work in the field to ensure that organizational programs are implemented sustainably.
She said the training is important for establishing a common understanding while improving board members' capabilities in carrying out their organizational responsibilities. Union officials must also understand current developments in the world of work and employment policy so they can perform their duties more effectively.

SPSI North Sumatra will continue expanding its organizational network at the regency and city levels as well as within companies. Internal consolidation and efforts to improve the capabilities of union officials are part of the strategy to strengthen the union's presence while expanding services and protection for its members.
Through regular consolidation meetings, the leadership board hopes to bring together all the organization's potential within a unified working structure.
