DELISERDANG | INDATANEWS.COM - North Sumatra Governor Bobby Nasution welcomed the newly appointed North Sumatra Regional Police Chief, Inspector General of Police Sonny Irawan. At the same time, he reaffirmed the North Sumatra Provincial Government's commitment to further strengthening synergy and cooperation with the police.
Bobby Nasution was accompanied by Chairwoman of the North Sumatra Family Welfare Movement (TP PKK), Kahiyang Ayu, during the reception. Together, they welcomed Inspector General of Police
Sonny Irawan and his wife, Yessie
Sonny Irawan, who also serves as Chairwoman of the North Sumatra Bhayangkari organization, at Gate 12 of the arrival area of Kualanamu International Airport in Deliserdang on Tuesday, October 6, 2026.
During the reception, Bobby Nasution also placed a traditional Malay headpiece, known as a tanjak, on Sonny Irawan. The presentation of the tanjak symbolized respect and served as an official expression of welcome from the North Sumatra Provincial Government to Sonny Irawan, who will now resume his duties in North Sumatra.
Bobby Nasution welcomed
Sonny Irawan and wished him success in beginning his new assignment. He said the change in leadership at the
North Sumatra Regional Police could serve as an important moment to further improve coordination between the regional government and the police.
"Welcome and I wish you success in carrying out your duties in North Sumatra. We hope that synergy and cooperation between the North Sumatra Provincial Government and the North Sumatra Regional Police will continue to be strengthened to maintain security and provide the best possible service to the community," Bobby said.
Close Cooperation Between Government and Police
According to Bobby, security and public order are important foundations for ensuring that various development programs in North Sumatra can be implemented optimally.
He emphasized that the regional government cannot create a safe and stable situation on its own. Therefore, coordination with all elements of the Regional Leadership Coordination Forum (Forkopimda) must continue to be strengthened to respond to various challenges in society.
Bobby also underscored the importance of the participation of all Forkopimda elements in supporting government programs. Effective cooperation, he said, would have a direct impact on the public's sense of security and comfort.
"Development cannot move forward optimally without a safe and stable situation. Therefore, the synergy of all Forkopimda elements is very important so that people feel safe and comfortable," he said.
For the North Sumatra Provincial Government, strengthening relations with the police is also an important component of maintaining regional stability. A stable security situation creates the necessary conditions for the government to implement development measures, public services and various strategic programs more effectively.
Sonny Irawan's appointment as the new
North Sumatra Regional Police Chief is expected by the provincial government to further improve communication between the regional government and the Indonesian National Police, both in maintaining security and delivering public services.

Sonny Irawan Returns to North Sumatra
Inspector General of Police Sonny Irawan was officially appointed North Sumatra Regional Police Chief after Indonesian National Police Chief General of Police Suyudi Ario Seto appointed him as part of a series of transfers and promotions within the Indonesian National Police.
Before being appointed head of the
North Sumatra Regional Police,
Sonny Irawan served as head of the Intermediate Leadership Staff School at the Indonesian National Police Education and Training Institution. He assumed the position after previously serving as Deputy
North Sumatra Regional Police Chief.
Sonny is a graduate of the 1997 class of the Police Academy. Throughout his career in the Indonesian National Police, he has held various strategic positions, particularly in the traffic police field.
His career in traffic policing began, among other assignments, in 2007, when he was appointed Head of the Traffic Unit at the Banyuwangi Police. This experience subsequently led him to various strategic positions within the traffic police.
From 2022 to 2023, Sonny was entrusted with leading the Traffic Directorate of the East Kalimantan Regional Police as Traffic Director. After completing his assignment in East Kalimantan, he was appointed in 2023 as Traffic Director of the Central Java Regional Police.
His career subsequently brought him to North Sumatra. In 2025, he was appointed Deputy
North Sumatra Regional Police Chief. Through this assignment, Sonny gained experience and an understanding of the region's characteristics and security dynamics.
On July 30, 2026, Sonny was transferred from his position as Deputy North Sumatra Regional Police Chief and assigned a new role as head of the Intermediate Leadership Staff School at the Indonesian National Police Education and Training Institution.
Only a short time after taking up the position, Sonny was once again entrusted with leading the
North Sumatra Regional Police. His appointment thus brings him back to a region that had previously represented an important chapter in his career with the Indonesian National Police.

Forkopimda Supports New Leadership
Various government officials and representatives of the Regional Leadership Coordination Forum in North Sumatra also attended the reception for the new North Sumatra Regional Police Chief.
Several members of the North Sumatra Regional House of Representatives, representatives of the prosecution service, heads of various organizational units within the
North Sumatra Provincial Government and representatives of the
North Sumatra Regional Police were present at the event.
Deliserdang Regent Asri Ludin Tambunan also attended the event together with representatives of the Deliserdang Regency Government. The presence of representatives from various institutions demonstrated support for the new leadership of the North Sumatra Regional Police while also creating further opportunities for stronger inter-institutional coordination.
Bobby Nasution had previously emphasized that the regional government needed the support of all Forkopimda elements to ensure that various development programs were implemented according to their objectives. In this context, the police play an important role in maintaining security and stability and ensuring a safe environment for the public.
Cooperation between the North Sumatra Provincial Government and the North Sumatra Regional Police is also not expected to focus solely on security issues. It is also intended to help address various social problems and improve public services that require the involvement of multiple institutions.
Given his previous service as Deputy
North Sumatra Regional Police Chief, the
North Sumatra Provincial Government hopes that
Sonny Irawan can further develop the coordination that has already been established. Intensive communication between the government and police is an important starting point for addressing various regional challenges while accelerating development implementation.
The arrival of Sonny Irawan as the new North Sumatra Regional Police Chief also marks the beginning of a new leadership period within the North Sumatra Regional Police. The North Sumatra Provincial Government has expressed its readiness to continue working with the police to further improve security, public order and public services for the welfare of the people.
