DELI SERDANG | INDATANEWS.COM - The Deli Serdang Regency Government began construction of town squares in the Pagar Merbau and Sibiru-Biru districts on Wednesday, September 23, 2026. The launch of the two public infrastructure projects was marked by groundbreaking ceremonies. The ceremony in Pagar Merbau was held directly at the project site, while the regional government representatives followed the groundbreaking ceremony in Sibiru-Biru via video conference.
Deli Serdang Regent dr. H. Asri Ludin Tambunan attended the event alongside Deputy Regent Lom Lom Suwondo, S.S., Chairwoman of the Deli Serdang Regional PKK Team Jelita Asriludin Tambunan, as well as representatives of the regional administration and relevant agencies.
The construction of the two town squares is part of the Deli Serdang Regency Government's efforts to provide public spaces while developing areas that can support social activities and the economic growth of local communities.
The Deli Serdang Regent said the construction of the Pagar Merbau town square plays an important role in the area's development plan. The regional government is not merely developing an open public space but is also planning various supporting facilities that are expected to become a new center for community activities.
"This is expected to become the center of development in Pagar Merbau. Hopefully, it can help improve the economic conditions of the community," he said.
Town Square to Become the Center of Pagar Merbau Development
Asri Ludin said the regional government is preparing a more comprehensive development plan for the Pagar Merbau area. The town square is part of an integrated area development plan that will be connected with various other facilities.
The planned developments include an urban forest, a minicross track, a state senior high school (SMA Negeri), a TPS-3R waste management facility, an UMKM center for micro, small and medium enterprises, road improvements, a monument, and a planned volleyball court.
The various facilities are expected to strengthen the area's function while providing residents with greater opportunities for social, economic, educational, sports, and recreational activities.
The construction of the Pagar Merbau town square is also expected to have an impact on micro, small and medium enterprise activities. With a public space integrated with an UMKM center and supported by improved infrastructure, the regional government hopes to establish a new economic activity center that can be utilized by the local community.
The Regent emphasized that the town square should serve a purpose beyond simply being an open public space. The regional government wants the facility to become a place for interaction and community engagement while also supporting economic growth in Pagar Merbau.
Through this area development concept, residents are expected to have a place for gathering, sports, recreation, and economic activities. The regional government can also utilize the various supporting facilities to strengthen connectivity and community activities around the town square.

Sibiru-Biru Construction to Be Closely Monitored
At the same time, the Deli Serdang Regency Government began construction of the town square in Sibiru-Biru District. Unlike in Pagar Merbau, the groundbreaking ceremony in Sibiru-Biru was conducted under virtual supervision through a video conference.
Deputy Regent Lom Lom Suwondo connected virtually with representatives of Sibiru-Biru District. During the meeting, he called on the district head and district administration staff to monitor the construction process.
According to Lom Lom, supervision is an important part of ensuring that the construction work is carried out according to plan and ultimately provides tangible benefits for the community.
"Carry out proper supervision so that the construction of this town square runs smoothly and ultimately benefits the community," Lom Lom said.
The instruction also underscores the important role of the district administration in overseeing construction activities within its respective jurisdiction. The supervision concerns not only the physical implementation of the project but also ensuring that the resulting public facility meets the needs of local residents.
With construction now underway in the two districts, the Deli Serdang Regency Government is continuing its efforts to expand public facilities at the district level. Public spaces can serve as venues for a wide range of community activities while also becoming part of broader area development.
